How Much Money are you Wasting on the Gym?

The dusty gym membership card and the cancelled fitness class are long-running jokes. We’ve all been too busy, too lazy, or too hungover to hit the gym at some point, no matter how hard we try to stay in shape. But the amount of money we spend on gym time we don’t use is shocking.

The average Brightonian will spend £120 on an unused gym membership before cancelling their subscription, according to a survey by fitness subscription platform MoveGB. That’s a whole three months of letting your gym card go unused before doing something about it – the average monthly gym subscription in town is £40.

A staggering 50 per cent of those interviewed in Brighton and Hove said they felt ‘locked in’ to memberships they could not freeze or cancel. 33 per cent of the gym bunnies said a lack of flexibility with their current membership is causing them to exercise less than they would like to.

Alister Rollins, the founder of MoveGB, said: “The survey has revealed some interesting trends that are supported by other research done by ourselves, Sport England and other industry bodies. Put simply, variety is not just the spice of life, it’s the secret to staying active.

“People get bored of going to the same gym and they need variety when exercising to help motivate them and help them stay active for longer. “Turning down other forms of physical exercise because they have to pay more to take part in the activity, means people are becoming less active and they lose motivation to pursue activities that make them feel good.
