Sussex University is warning students to be aware of a scam email which is currently circulating around the student body.
The email promises students a one-off grant of £1829 from the Department of Education which will be awarded to students based on numerous criteria including “moral support”.
Students who open the message from the Loughborough University email address are told they must give personal details and bank details immediately in order to receive their grants.
The university released a statement today urging any students taken in by the scam to get help from the Student Life Centre and to contact their banks as soon as possible if they have given out bank details.
The university’s IT services say although they have systems to block unwanted and fraudulent messages, some still make it through as it is impossible to catch all of them.
