Police are questioning a 35 year old man on suspicion of murder after a mother and daughter were fatally shot in their home on Friday night. The victims have been named as Heather and Michelle Whitbread and have been described by family members as ‘beautiful people that filled our family with laughter’.
There was a huge police response on Bexhill Road, St Leonards as reports quickly came in of the fatal shooting. A police helicopter was sent and armed police arrived in their masses shortly after the initial 7:43pm report was made. The police were able to enter to the house and lead two other women, one of whom was pregnant, to safety. Both were unharmed but were treated for shock in hospital. The police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident as the attacker was known to the victims. He was found under a railway underpass two hours after the shooting and was taken to custody where he remains.
1/2 My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims in last night's tragic shooting incident in Bexhill Road. I've spoken to the police chief and want to commend the swift actions of the police and other emergency services in responding to this incident.

Local MP Amber Rudd led the tributes to the two women following the release of a family statement via Sussex Police which read ”They were both special, generous and kind people who loved life, but most of all their family. They will both be sorely missed leaving a gap that can never be filled. We now just wish to be left to grieve in private as a family.”
