Brighton and Hove Thomas Cook shops hope to re-open in Hays Travel buyout
Since the news last week that Hays Travel will be taking over 555 Thomas Cook shops and re-employing 2,500 retail staff throughout the UK, the two Thomas Cook shops in Church Road, Hove and North Street in Brighton are still currently empty, with local employees waiting to hear whether they will soon be re-employed as part of the Hays buyout.
Managing Director John Hays stated last week: “Our staff were devastated to hear about Thomas Cook and we all immediately felt we wanted to help. In the last two weeks we have already employed or offered jobs to around 600 former Thomas Cook colleagues”. Hays Travel has been operating for 40 years and their sales figures reached the £1 billion mark in 2018. John Hays confirmed in a press statement last week that the company had acquired the lease to all 555 of the UK Thomas Cook shops and that they were keen to keep the business running without delay and had already re-opened 138 shops last Friday.
Hays Travel confirmed that all the Thomas Cook shops would change their name to Hays Travel and would bring the total number of shops to 745 for the UK travel chain. Since Hays Travel already has a Hove branch in George St, it is possible that they may even have two Hove branches and one in Brighton. The travel company hope to confirm their plan within the next couple of weeks.
