Brighton Council CCTV operator jailed over indecent images of children
A CCTV operator for Brighton and Hove City Council has been found guilty of possession of indecent images of children after a Sussex Police investigation.
Anthony East, 68, of Balcombe Road, Peacehaven, was sentenced to 16 months in prison last Thursday (1 November) in Hove Crown Court.
East, who was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) greatly preventing his access to children and computers, will be a registered sex offender for life.
Detective Chief Inspector Pierre Serra of the Brighton Safeguarding Investigations Unit said; “The indecent images were found on his home computer system and were unrelated to his work.”
The defendant was a Brighton and Hove Council CCTV operator and in July last year, police CCTV operators, who work together on the system, discovered East was zooming in on children at the Level Park in Brighton without reason to do so.
There was no evidence East was committing a crime in doing this, but the investigation subsequently led to the discovery of over 2000 indecent images of children, including images of the most serious nature.
DCI Serra also added all images came from the Internet and there is no evidence they were of local children.
East pleaded guilty to all of the offences made against him.
Public space CCTV monitoring of cameras across the city is operated jointly by the Council and Sussex Police.
Council operators are employed to oversee the cameras for traffic monitoring and related enforcement only.
