Brighton and Hove get involved for upcoming ‘Movember’ month

Brighton and Hove get involved for upcoming ‘Movember’ month
Hannah Midgley

Movember marks the month of the year where moustaches and beards are grown across the globe and not just in Brighton and Hove. Although a thick moustache and beard are commonplace one the face of many people in our city, this worldwide event aims to “change the face of men’s health”.

Since 2004, the Movember Foundation charity has hosted events raising money for men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, suicide, and depression. The organisation work towards encouraging earlier detection of cancer, diagnosis, and treatments by articulating the importance of regular medical check-ups. So far, the charity has funded over 1,200 projects across 21 countries in these particular areas.

You can ‘Save a Bro’ by growing a ‘Mo’ this November and getting friends and family members to sponsor your moustache or beard. Alternatively, you can ‘Move for Movember’ this month by either running or walking 60km over the month period and raise money for the cause. ’60’ represents the number of men who commit suicide every hour around the world.

Another running event taking place in Brighton and Hove and other UK cities for Movember is ‘MoRunning’. The city’s third edition of the 10k, 5k, and 1.5k MiniMo runs will be based on Western Lawns in Hove. The route is flat and fast along the city’s seafront. Fancy dress and moustache attire is strongly encouraged for this event. Winners of the 5k and 10k event will receive a Yellow Jersey, and all participants are given a medal for incredible fundraising and running efforts.

A spokesperson of behalf of MoRunning said: “MoRunners have helped raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for vital men’s health programs, but they also work to raise awareness of key men’s health issues, sparking important conversations about our causes; prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health. The MoRunning community is a vital part of the annual Movember campaign.

This year, the legendary Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run announced a partnership with the Movember Foundation. As the world’s longest motoring event, this year’s run marks the 122nd anniversary. Vehicles that predate 1905 come from all over the world to race down to the finishing line at Brighton’s Madeira Drive. Entrants of this year’s race will be able to show support for the partnered charity by purchasing the exclusive ‘carstache’, which can be displayed on the front of the veteran cars. All funds raised will be given directly to the Movember Foundation.

Anne-Cecile Berthier, Movember Foundation County Director UK & Europe, said: “Working together in partnership with the Veteran Car Run team will allow us to meet and engage with the local and international motoring community. It will also provide an exceptional platform for the Movember Foundation to raise funds to continue the incredible work we are doing to improve the health, and quality of life, of men around the world.”

Bonhams Veteran Car Run is on Sunday 4th November 2018 and Brighton’s MoRunning event will take place on Saturday 10th November at 9.30am.
