Hove Man Pleads Guilty to Spree of Sexual Assaults in Brighton
The prolific assaulter was notorious in Brighton during the time of his assaults
21-year-old Brighton and Hove citizen Constantin Barbutu has pleaded guilty to 11 charges of sexual assault.
The various incidents occurred at several places around the city, and were of a similar nature.
The places in which these incidents occurred are:
- Old Steine, London Road, Madeira Drive and Montpelier Terrace, in Brighton.
- Richardson Road, New Church Road, Portland Avenue, King’s Road, Holland Road, Somerhill Road, Brunswick Lawns, St Ann’s Wells Gardens, Lansdowne Road, The Drive, Cromwell Road, Medina Villas and Eaton Villas, in Hove.
The reported events all occurred in the period between September 2016 and February 2017.
According to the prosecutor Andrew Walker, the events involved “the defendant approaching female members of the public and striking their bottoms before making off”.
The Cromwell Road resident will no longer face trial at Hove Crown Court due to his admission of guilt.
Walker pushed for the case to be heard at a Crown Court because of its seriousness.
Walker at the time of the original trial stated that: “It is not a one-off incident. It is a whole series of incidents. Clearly, it is a serious matter”
There were 21 charges overall, but the remaining 10 will lie on file. It is assumed that this is because of the similar nature of each assault.
According to Sussex Police, 24 incidents were initially reported to them.
Barbutu is to be released on bail until his sentencing on the 20th of July.
