Greggs vegan sausage roll sells out in Brighton stores in first morning
Brighton Greggs stores have reportedly sold out of their new vegan sausage roll launched in selected stores across the UK this morning.
The vegan savoury pastry was made available in all three Brighton stores, but have proven to be very popular already, with people disappointed they were unable to purchase one.
A source for the Western Road branch of Greggs told Brighton Journal they sold out completely by 11 o’clock this morning (3 January).
They also added this was the same case for the North Street and London Road stores, and they were not expecting another delivery until this Saturday (5th January).
The campaign to launch the vegan sausage roll was launched last year after complaints the food store did not accommodate enough for plant-based diets.
Along with the pastry, Greggs introduced a Mexican bean wrap for vegans, along with a range of other snacks.
Many took to social media to express their disappointment in not being able to get their hands on the brand new baked good.
One Twitter user said it was “the most typical Brighton thing” the vegan sausage roll had already sold out across its three stores.
Brighton is renowned for its vegan-friendly city status, with dozens of exclusively vegan food outlets and hundreds more selling plant-based options.
According to the store’s website, the new Greggs’ vegan sausage roll promises “to mirror some of the sausage roll’s classic features including 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry”.
They added: “Instead, we wrap it around our own bespoke Quorn filling.”
Greggs teamed up with Quorn to make the pastry, a company producing meat substitute products made from mycoprotein, a fungus grown from fermentation.
The vegan food product is made by using potato protein instead of egg as a binder.
The new product was introduced as part of this month’s Veganuary, the organisation encouraging people to pledge to veganism for January.
