A bunch of phalluses are set to frolic along the seafront a week on Thursday, and it’s all in the name of charity. Orchid, the UK’s leading name working on behalf of anyone affected by male cancer, will host the fun-run on July 25th. Established in 1996 by testicular cancer patient Colin Osborne MBE and the oncologist who saved his life, Professor Tim Oliver, Orchid exists to aid the victims of male cancer through a range of support services, education and awareness campaigns. Participants are invited to walk, run, slip, crawl or roll the 2k route along the front and the only serious terms are that the message surrounding male cancer is heard loud and clear. Every year over 50,000 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate, testicular and penile cancer. Of these men over 47,000 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, over 2,400 will be diagnosed with testicular cancer and over 630 will be diagnosed with the rare penile cancer. Sadly, these numbers are increasing. (Figures Cancer Research UK; 2014).

Vital funds are needed to tackle (!) these sliding statistics and this tongue-in-cheek event is a worthy way of doing so; the entry fee is £20 and everybody involved is required to raise at least £100 in sponsorship before setting off. All of the proceeds will then go towards the fight against male cancer. Please note: the inflatable male-shaped costumes are provided and can be kept thereafter. What lengths would you go to to help?
