As the official countdown to Christmas begins this weekend, the Brighton Open Market is hosting an extremely exciting event to get you in the spirit! This Sunday, (December 2nd) an entirely vegan Christmas market invites the people of Brighton to enjoy a free festivity in aid of creating a food bank for the homeless who are also vegan.

The market gives local residents the opportunity to support independent businesses in Brighton & Hove, who are all engaging in creating vegan, waste-free and sustainable products!

All proceeds from a Christmas tombola and rent from trader’s stalls will be donated to mutual aid vegan food bank to help the homeless.

Plant-based food and waste-free gifts

In light of recent news, it is clear many local people share concerns that Brighton could be doing more to provide recycling opportunities for its residents. The Christmas market this Sunday engages in completely sustainable practice, allowing guests to indulge in delicious vegan treats and shop for recycled gifts that encourage others to think about their carbon footprint.

Organiser Diane, spoke to Brighton Journal about why she decided to run the event:

“I walk past so many homeless people everyday on my way to my shop Omthings in the Open Market.

“It’s difficult knowing who to support, as a vegan myself and knowing how the world needs change, Veganism is one of the answers.”

Diane feels like Christmas can often involve great greed and consumerism, but encourages that her event could help to change a the way some people approach the festive season.

From non-recyclable wrapping paper, to enormous food waste, from plastic packaging and large consumptions of meat, Christmas is often a season where sustainability can take a back seat. At this fun event, visitors can enjoy all the festivities guilt-free whilst also supporting local businesses and charity. What’s not to love?
