The stage of a Saint-Tropez nightclub, a colourful turbulent show, and loads of extravaganza! The award-winning musical La Cage Aux Folles will come to Brighton’s Theatre Royal as part of its first UK tour next month. Get ready for a high-kicking troupe of cabaret dancers, a breath-taking star drag queen and a funny story about family values and unconditional love.

Based on the original French theatre play of the same name, the musical follows the story of star drag act Albin, aka Zaza, and her partner Georges who owns the infamous La Cage Aux Folles nightclub where Zaza puts on her show. Their life in sunny Saint-Tropez could hardly be more idyllic until they receive news that put them in a real dilemma.

When their son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to the daughter of the rigorous right-wing politician who wants to put an end to the local nightlife, their idyllic life is shaken by a proper dose of drama and trouble. Albin being forced to jump into the role of a proper wife to impress the future in-laws and pretend to be a “normal” family, it is just a matter of time when he will crack under the pressure.

Bill Kenwright has taken on the famous musical that has won several Tony and Olivier awards to create a stunning new production that hasn’t failed to impress the critics. Mark Shenton from The Stage said about the production:

“Martin Connor’s staging gets the tone and rhythm absolutely right. It delivers the show with the exact measures of affection and affectation required, from Bill Deamer’s blissful, razor-sharp period floorshow choreography to Gary McCann’s glorious fin de siecle inspired sets that are as much Las Vegas as they are French Rivera.”

Kenwright’s production of La Cage Aux Folles features some well-known names in the theatre scene. After his appearances in several West End productions such as A Chorus Line, Cats, Starlight Express and Chicago, John Partridge now takes over the role of Zaza while the part of club owner Georges is assured by Grease musical star Adrian Zmed. Marti Webb, one of the West End’s most revered leading ladies, is also part of the cast in the role of restaurant owner Jacqueline.

As part of its first UK tour, La Cage Aux Folles will be playing at the Theatre Royal in Brighton from Tuesday, August 15, until Saturday, August 26. Tickets are on sale now.
