(CNN) At least two people were killed and 16 others injured after a train derailed north of Cairo, on Tuesday, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Transport said in a statement that the passenger train collided with a train station platform in the city of Qalyub.
The accident occurred at 7:20 pm local time, according to a statement from the Egyptian National Railway Authority, after the train failed to respond to a signal signal, eventually hitting an insulating plug causing part of the train to jump onto the tracks.
About 20 ambulances rushed to the scene to help the injured.
The statement added that the Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamal Al-Wazir, ordered the formation of a committee to find out the causes of the derailment and “identify those responsible and limit the damage.”
Separately, Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the government will provide 100,000 Egyptian pounds (equivalent to $3,254) to the families of those killed.
