A giant gas explosion in Kenya has left more than 300 injured, three dead and a trail of destruction in Nairobi.

A lorry carrying gas exploded in Embakasi district at around 11:30pm local time. “Lighting a Big Fireball”A government spokesman said.

Homes, businesses and cars were damaged, and a large fire near the apartments was seen in the video.

The area is cordoned off and The cause of the explosion is being investigated.

The BBC understands at least one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The government initially said the explosion occurred at a gas plant where workers were filling gas cylinders, but later clarified. A truck explodes at their stop.

It is reported that the fire caused by this has now been brought under control.

Embakasi police chief Wesley Kimeto said a child was among the dead, adding that the death toll could rise.

According to officials, around 271 people, including at least 25 children, have been hospitalized.

Nairobi Mayor Sakaja Johnson said many of these people had been treated and sent home, but at least 39 people were sent to other facilities with serious or life-threatening injuries.

Another 27 people are being treated at the scene in critical condition.

Its head of disaster operations, Vanand Ndingila, told the BBC's Newsday programme A search and rescue operation. They are trying to find out whether people have disappeared or taken shelter elsewhere.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) said in a statement that the gas plant was illegal and rejected three applications for construction permits to build a storage and filling facility at the site.
