Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree patch 1.12.3 has finally fixed the Golden Hippopotamus fight, so this annoying monster won’t be breathing down your neck the moment you enter its arena.
Today, July 4, Bandai Namco released a new patch for Elden Ring, which you can check out in full at Publisher’s websiteThe headliner of the new patch is likely to be the tweaks made to two of the most frustrating bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree: Commander Gaius and Golden Hippopotamus.
“The bosses in the rematch against Golden Hippopotamus and Commander Gaius have been repositioned to be in the same position as in the first fight,” the patch notes read. This means that both bosses will no longer attack you as soon as you enter their arenas, which is great news.

You hate Golden Hippo. I hate Golden Hippo. We all hate Golden Hippo. But with this patch, it means that the Shadow of the Erdtree boss should wake up from his slumber when you go back to try to defeat him again, instead of rushing at you and not even letting you summon a spirit once the fight starts.
The change is also good for Commander Gaius for similar reasons – the boar-riding boss won’t be anywhere near you once the fight starts. I have to say that Gaius was much easier to deal with once he started fighting than the golden hippo, which was very annoying, but still frustrating in its own right.
Additionally, the new patch for Elden Ring fixed a bug where “the unblockable bite attacks of the Golden Hippopotamus boss were connecting with players more easily than I intended.” I knew I wasn’t imagining things — it turns out that every time I thought I’d dodged an attack, only to be swallowed by the Golden Hippo, I was actually dodging the attack fairly well.
