“The Penguin” is a very successful movie.
According to HBO, the spinoff starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti has drawn 5.3 million U.S. viewers across all platforms since its debut on Sept. 19. That includes repeats on HBO as well as online viewers. That puts it above the season finale premiere of “Succession,” which drew 4.9 million viewers, and the season two premiere of “The White Lotus,” which drew 4.1 million viewers. It also trails the premiere of “True Detective: Night Country,” which drew 5.7 million viewers.
Additionally, the show achieved the largest four-day audience for a new series on Max in every region worldwide since “The Last of Us” in January 2023.
Farrell reprises his role from “Batman” in the series, once again playing Gotham City mobster Oswald “Oz” Cobb. The series begins in the days following the events of “Batman”, as Oz seeks to seize control of Gotham’s underworld in the vacuum left by the death of his former boss, Carmine Falcone.
The show has also received a lot of love from critics, with “The Penguin” currently holding a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In its review of “The Penguin: The … diverse“The show is a deft examination of crime, twisted, disturbing and immensely interesting,” wrote Aramide Tinubu.
The series’ cast also includes Renzi Velez, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo, and Michael Zegen. Mark Strong portrays Falcon in flashback scenes, while John Turturro played the character in “The Batman.”

Farrell is executive producer and stars. Craig Zobel is executive producer and director of the first three episodes. Danielle Pipski of 6th & Idaho also serves as executive producer, as does Bill Carraro, with Rafi Krohn as co-executive producer.
