Dodgers vs. Mets, live updates: NLCS heads to New York for Game 3 with the series tied 1-1

The New York Mets return home with momentum in the 2024 National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets jumped all over the Dodgers in Game 2, scoring six runs in the first two innings, starting with Francisco Lindor’s walk-off home run in the first and punctuating Mark Ventus’ grand slam in the second.

Now, with the series tied one game at a time, the next three games will be played at Citi Field, starting Wednesday. New York, which earned a playoff spot in a make-up doubleheader the day after the regular season was scheduled to end, now has home-field advantage in what has become a best-of-five to advance to the World Series.

Luis Severino (1-0, 4.50 ERA, 12.0 IP, 10K, 2BB in 2024 postseason) starts for the Mets against Walker Buehler for the Dodgers (0-1, 10.80 ERA, 5.0 IP, 0K, 1BB) in Game 3.

  • The Dodgers bring in one of their best relief arms in Michael Kopesh to face the top of the Mets order and go 1-2-3 in the fifth, but with a pair of fly balls to the warning track by Lindor and Vientos. The 2-0 Dodgers are still there, and the Mets have four innings to change that.

  • Garrett makes Hernandez swing to end the inning scoreless. Severino’s final line: 4 2/3 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 BB, 3 K, 95 pitches.

  • Luis Severino walks Max Muncy, and that will do it for him. The Mets bring in Red Garrett to face Teoscar Hernandez with two outs and two outs.

Overall, a solid start for Severino, considering the Mets defense (including his own) did him little favors in the second half.

  • Stop. Francisco Lindor makes a stunning play to steal a hit from Mookie Betts. Add to his already long postseason highlight reel.

  • Buehler pitches a 1-2-3 inning, and four scoreless innings and 90 pitches will likely do it for him. His command was off, and he got into trouble a few times, but the Dodgers will accept that, given his form in other games.

The Dodgers are still 2-0 through four in New York.

  • Luis Severino works a low-pressure fourth to keep the score 2-0. The pitch counts are big right now, with Severino at 79 through four and Buehler at 73 through three. With three games in three days, this is an important day to keep the bullpen going.

  • Walker Buehler works around two baserunners to score a scoreless third. He’s the biggest X-factor in this game and perhaps in the entire series, and he’s been succeeding so far.

  • Severino loads the bases but gets out of the jam with a soft line by Teoscar Hernandez and a groundout by Gavin Lux. It’s still 2-0 to the Dodgers, and things could have been a lot worse.

  • Luis Severino opens the third inning by walking Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, and the Dodgers again threaten with no outs. Severino receives a visit from the shooting coach.

  • The biggest hit of the game (so far) ends up being hit by Francisco Lindor with the bases loaded. It was a huge relief for Walker Buehler, and it was still a 2-0 Dodgers win.

  • And now Tyrone Taylor’s walk to load the bases. Buehler melted under similar circumstances in the second inning of his NLDS start. We’ll see if this goes south as well.

  • And now the Mets are threatening after a defensive error by the Dodgers. Tommy Edman bobbles a potential double play ball, then loses it again on the bounce to give New York two goals with one out.

  • Dodgers 2, Mets 0

Tyrone Taylor makes a stunning play on the warning track — while narrowly avoiding disaster on a collision with Starling Marte — to steal extra bases from Tommy Edman.

However, the runner from third still scores, so the Dodgers get one more run.

  • Dodgers 1, Mets 0

In a nine-pitch game, Will Smith fights back from an 0-2 deficit and scores a run on a home run off Severino. The Dodgers haven’t gotten out of the ballpark this inning, but they now have the lead.

  • Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez got a little aggressive there. Teoscar Hernandez hit a swinging bunt, and Alvarez tried to throw out Max Muncy, who walked, to second instead of taking the ball easily at first, but the throw was overturned.

Both runners are safe, and now the Dodgers have two with neither out.

  • Walker Buehler responds with a scoreless first inning, with a single from Brandon Nimmo providing the first hit of the game. Buehler looked good in the first inning of his last start against the Padres before everything went south.

  • Luis Severino goes over the top of the Dodgers lineup with a 1-2-3 first inning, with hits by Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman (although the final hit on Betts would have been a 4-ball with a Robo-omb). We call that a good start.
