An Italian woman who was surfing on an island off the west coast of Sumatra died in a freak accident when she was stabbed by a swordfish, according to reports.
Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported that 36-year-old Giulia Manfrini was surfing in the waters of Masukot Island in the Mentawai Islands, off the western coast of Sumatra, when she was stabbed by the beak of a swordfish.
Acting head of the Mentawai Islands Disaster Management Agency, Lahmuddin Siregar, told the media that his agency had been notified of the accident involving an Italian national who was surfing.
He said Manfrini was catching waves in the waters of Ombak Bingbing on Masukot Island in the southwest area of Siberut.

“Unexpectedly, the swordfish jumped towards Manfrini and pinned it to the tourist’s chest,” Siregar added.
Information obtained by Antara from the Siberut police indicates that Manfrini asked for help by waving to two witnesses who were also foreign nationals, Alexander Ribas and Massimo Ferro.

The two witnesses rushed to Manfrini’s aid and gave her first aid before transporting her to a nearby clinic, where she was pronounced dead.
A medical examination conducted by the medical team in Bay Bay Bushkamas showed that Manfrini had a stab wound in the upper part of the chest, approximately 5 cm deep. The report also stated that the victim’s nose was foaming, indicating a lack of oxygen due to drowning.

Manfrini’s body is currently in Bye Bye Pushkamas and is expected to be transported to the city of Padang before being returned to Italy.
Manfrini reportedly grew up in Venaria Reale, Italy, a community outside the city of Turin.
