A far-right member of the Polish Parliament used a fire extinguisher to extinguish a candle on the menorah that was lit on the occasion of Hanukkah in the Parliament building.
A far-right representative in the Polish Parliament used a fire extinguisher, today, Tuesday, and extinguished a candle on the menorah that was lit on the occasion of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
All major political forces quickly condemned the incident carried out by Grzegorz Braun and said that anti-Semitic and xenophobic behavior would not be tolerated in the Sejm, Poland’s parliament.
Parliament Speaker Simon Holonia described the act as “absolutely scandalous” and excluded it from parliamentary proceedings for the day. He said that he would inform the public prosecutor about him.
“Poland is the homeland of all religions,” Holonia said.
TVN24 showed footage of Brown holding a red fire extinguisher as he put out the fire and caused smoke or fog to fill the area. Parliamentary proceedings were temporarily suspended.
New Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as a disgrace and said such a thing should never be repeated. Tusk was elected on Monday and delivered his inaugural speech to parliament on Tuesday, pledging to call on the Western world to continue its aid to Ukraine.
Brown, a member of the pro-Russian Confederation Party, has falsely claimed in the past that there is a plot to turn Poland into a “Jewish state.”
After the incident, the candles were lit again.
