Tyler Perry spoke Monday night about his loyalties in the 2024 presidential election.
“Let me tell you what is important to me, and I want you to hear me clearly when I say this,” Perry said. Hollywood Reporter In the divorce in black “What’s important to me is that America remains a democracy free of anyone who tries to change that or tries to take the power of a dictator or a king. So I support anyone who stands against that.”
Perry endorsed President Biden in the 2020 election. Now, his less specific comments come as some in Hollywood have come out against the incumbent president’s bid for a second term. Actors and executives like Reed Hastings, Abigail Disney, Robert Reiner and others have called on Biden to drop out of the race (though Reiner backtracked in a tweet on Monday). Many have cited the president’s debate performance last month as cause for concern, arguing that Biden is too old to seek reelection.
Perry also spoke at the premiere about the lessons he learned from making a film about divorce statistics.
“I don’t know if I learned what I wanted to teach,” Perry said. “Letting things go and not trying to hold on to them… Loving someone in a place they can’t go is so important.”
