Apple Watch Series 10 one month later: It’s the anti-Ultra model

I’ve been wearing the Apple Watch Series 10 for just over a month. In that time, several key features have emerged that make this, in many respects, the anti-Ultra model. Here’s what I mean.

The 10 Series prompted an early upgrade

Typically, I buy a new Apple Watch every two years. But this year, the 10 Series forced me to upgrade early. I had a Series 9 device that worked fine, but several Series 10 features led me to make an impulse purchase:

  • Faster charging
  • Thinner body
  • Wide-angle OLED
  • It’s always better to update

in general, List of features The Apple Watch Series 10 showed that this has been a bigger year than usual for the watch.

One month later, I absolutely believe this to be true. But I also found that some of the 10 Series’ most popular features don’t actually stand out that much.

In fact, while the Apple Watch Ultra draws attention to itself in every way, the Series 10 does the opposite. It kind of just…gets out of the way.

The size and thinness of the screen make the model surprisingly accurate

Take screen size for example. The 46mm Series 10 has a (barely) larger screen than the Apple Watch Ultra 2. But if you look at the two devices side by side, the Ultra shows off its screen size loud and proud, while the Series 10 makes it hard to even notice it.

When I first started wearing the Series 10, its larger screen caught my attention. But after a few days, it started to look basically like my Series 9.

This is partly because the 10 Series is missing the Ultra watch faces that take advantage of the larger display. This is also ultimately because the design is more elegant and intentionally nondescript.

The thinness of the 10 Series helps here. It is only 9.7mm thick, while the Ultra 2 is 14.4mm thick. They have essentially the same display size, but one model flaunts it while the other is more subtle, and prefers not to be noticed.

The imprecise Apple Watch Ultra 2

I started wearing my watch to sleep for the first time in years. If I have sleep apnea, it would be good to know. I think my experience wearing the watch while sleeping highlights the huge difference between the Series 10 and the Ultra.

Even though the Series 10 has a large screen, it’s so sleek on my wrist that it doesn’t bother me in bed. But I think the Ultra will definitely do that. I say this partly because some of the larger early watch models did this. They had smaller screens, but the thickness was hard to ignore while in bed, so I stopped wearing them.

Apple Watch Series 10: Anti-Ultra

After a month with Apple Watch Series 10I’ve found that I often don’t think about owning a new watch. Not because the new model isn’t different enough from last year. I really think it is. But because the design priorities of the 10 Series seek to keep the device out of the way. It’s a hygienic device that you can wear all the time, and it’s not very obvious when to do so.

In other words, it is an antidoteApple Watch Ultra. Elegant but not bulky, casual but not hardcore. This is not a judgment on which device is better. It’s just one way to understand their differences.
