Five people were killed when a gunman entered a retirement home in Croatia on Monday and opened fire, according to the country’s public broadcaster.

Croatian radio and television station reported that a man armed with a firearm entered a private home for the elderly in the town of Daruvar, about 75 miles east of the capital Zagreb, and opened fire on people present.

HRT reported that five of the victims died instantly, and the number of injured is still unknown. The official Hina news agency reported that some of the injured are still receiving medical assistance.

The gunman fled but was later captured near a cafe, HINA news agency reported.

HRT said the investigation was still ongoing, and police did not provide any additional details.

“We are horrified by the deaths of five people” at the nursing home, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said in a post on social media.

“We express our condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. I expect the competent authorities to establish all the circumstances of the horrific crime,” Plenkovic said.

Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Davor Bozinovic, Health Minister Veli Peros and Social Policy Minister Marin Biletic are travelling to Daruvar, the prime minister added.
