Elon Musk on Monday denied reports that he plans to funnel $45 million a month into a new political group supporting former President Donald Trump.
The Tesla CEO, who has endorsed Trump, also insisted he would never consider himself a “Make America Great Again” supporter. During the personal interview With conservative commentator Jordan B. Peterson.
While previous reports, citing sources, said the billionaire would pay the huge sum to the US political action committee, Musk has denied the assertion.
“What the media is reporting is completely untrue,” Musk told Peterson. “I am not donating $45 million a month to Trump.”
In a tweet on Tuesday evening, he also denied these reports.
“I do make some donations to the PAC, but at a much lower level, and the core values of the PAC are to support meritocracy and individual freedom.” Musk stated.
“Republicans are mostly, but not entirely, on the side of merit and liberty.”
Musk, 53, said he helped create the super PAC, which can raise unlimited funds for independent expenses that could help the campaign but are not directed directly to the campaign. Political groups are regularly used by both Republicans and Democrats.
“It’s not an extremist political action committee,” he said. “It’s actually the core principles of this committee, and its purpose is to advance the principles that made America great in the first place. I wouldn’t say I’m, for example, a MAGA or Make America Great Again follower. I think America is great. I’m more of a MAG or Make America Greater person.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that the group is focusing on rallying support for Trump in swing states to counter the efforts of Democrats in those crucial states.
The U.S. political action committee was created in Austin, Texas — where Tesla is headquartered — in May.
The PAC spent $21 million on independent expenditures that focused mostly on voter turnout, The New York Times reported on Tuesday:
Musk also said he doesn’t believe the Republican Party is flawless and doesn’t adhere to a “cult of personality” during the interview with Peterson.
But Cohen praised Trump for showing “real courage” after he was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month, and stressed that Republicans are the better choice over Democrats in November.
“I think we need a change in management,” Musk said.
