4:15 AM UTC
NEW YORK – Every fifth day, the Yankees have the luxury of watching Gerrit Cole in action, witnessing an ace at the peak of his career. It was a campaign in which the right-hander seemed to have it all together, a season that will likely be celebrated with his first Cy Young Award.
When Cole made his final start at Yankee Stadium this year on Thursday night, his dominant eight-inning effort put to rest any remaining debate about Cole’s place in the lead for the honor. He struck out nine, walked and allowed only two hits in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays.
As he walked to the dugout after his 107th pitch of the evening, Cole tipped his cap to a standing ovation from an announced crowd of 37,646.
“That was special to me,” Cole said. “I love playing at home in front of our fans. We have a lot of fans on the road too, but there’s something about having good nights in the Bronx. It doesn’t get much better than that.”
He is the American League leader in ERA (2.75), innings pitched (200), starts (32) and WHIP (1.02), all of which puts Cole in good position to fend off Cy Young challenges from the Mariners’ Luis Castillo, the Twins’ Sonny Gray and others.
“It hit me when he was coming out in the eighth and I knew he was done,” manager Aaron Boone said of Cole Cy Young’s chances. “This was his last home game of the regular season, and it definitely came to mind. I wanted to put my hand on him and tell him how proud I am of him.”
The Yankees have won each of Cole’s past six starts, dating back to August 25, during which time he went 4-0 with a 1.59 ERA. New York is 22-10 in Cole’s starts this year (and 55-66 in games started by everyone else).
“I was thinking about this during the game today,” said Jake Bowers, who hit a three-run homer in the first inning. “He’s so good that you can take him for granted. It’s very impressive the way he goes out there every five days and immediately gives you a chance to win the game. There’s not a lot of players like that in this league.”
For Cole, who remembers growing up in Orange County, California, as a die-hard Yankees fan who would print out JPEGs of the “Core Four” from his parents’ iMac, the pinstripe display was a perfect fit.
“My dad was yelling at me about wasting ink, but I stapled it to my wall,” Cole said. “It’s a dream come true.”
Working aggressively and efficiently, Cole retired Toronto’s first 16 batters before Alejandro Kirk’s double with one out in the sixth inning broke up his perfect attempt. Boone said he noticed Cole’s sharp repertoire from his first throw, a cutter that cut the outside corner of a called putt.
“He just got called,” Boone said. He had it where and how he wanted it all night. He was where he wanted to be, over and over again.
“He’s very in tune with how he’s at that day, what’s working and what’s not working, and being able to use what he has that day to his advantage,” catcher Ben Rortvedt said. “If something’s not working, he’ll find a way around it.”
The offense helped Cole on the other end.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Estevan Florial had back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, and Aaron Judge contributed a late RBI double, helping the Yanks snap their three-game losing streak.
But the story, as has happened several times this year, was about Cole.
“It’s a testament to the preparedness of everyone behind the scenes and my teammates making the plays for me,” Cole said.
“We are all playing behind him and trying to support him as best we can, because we know there is something special at stake,” Rortvedt added.
Although Cole appears to be on the doorstep of the Cy Young, an honor he has twice earned as runner-up, there is a bittersweet caveat. His best year as a Yankee to date appears to be one in which there will be no postseason moments for the author.
“It’s disappointing to have the season we’re having,” Cole said. “But regardless of whether you’re in it or not, as a professional, you just have to do your job. That’s the way I’ve approached my entire career.”
