What hurricanes has Jamaica ever had?

After Hurricane Beryl passed close to Jamaica on Wednesday, its hurricane-force conditions brought destruction to homes, power outages and at least one death.

Although several hurricanes have passed close to Jamaica in recent years, only a few have actually made landfall in the country in the past 40 years.

The most famous hurricane was a hurricane named Gilbert, which made landfall near Kingston, Jamaica on September 12, 1988 as a Category 4 hurricane, and remains a notorious storm event in the country.

The catastrophic storm, with winds of up to 130 mph, caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and killed at least 45 people.

The eye of Hurricane Gilbert made its way across the entire island of Jamaica, weakening only to 125 mph by the time it exited its west coast late in the afternoon.

Other notable hurricanes that have hit Jamaica hard include Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall in 2012 as a Category 1 hurricane.

Areas in Mexico and Texas have been directed to monitor Beryl’s progress: Map

There is uncertainty about the track and intensity forecast for Hurricane Beryl over the western Gulf of Mexico this week, the National Hurricane Center said.

Interests in eastern Mexico and southern Texas should monitor Beryl’s progress, but no matter which path the hurricane takes, updrafts could cause life-threatening beach conditions beginning late Friday and into the weekend across much of the Gulf Coast.

Meanwhile, hurricane-force winds, dangerous storm surges and heavy rains are expected across parts of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize beginning Thursday night as Beryl approaches, with strong winds, dangerous storm surges, damaging surf and flooding expected in the Cayman Islands today.

The hurricane is expected to hit a relatively unpopulated area on the Caribbean coast between Tulum and the inland city of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, said Laura Velasquez, head of Mexico’s civil defense agency.

Since the coast there is largely made up of lagoons and mangroves, there are few resorts or hotels in the area south of Tulum.

Velasquez said Beryl is expected to make a second impact on Mexican territory in the Gulf of Mexico states of Veracruz or Tamaulipas, near the Texas border.
