“Egot” refers to individuals who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony over the course of their careers in the entertainment field. Notable personalities with wins on all four award bodies include Rita Moreno, Alan Mencken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Mike Nichols, Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg.
Only 16 people in history have achieved EGOT in competitive categories before tonight Tony Awards. Now, Hudson is seventeenth.
Hudson took the first steps to achieving EGOT by winning an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in the 2006 movie “Dreamgirls.” Since then, Hudson has received two Grammys – one for Best Musical Theatrical Album for “The Color Purple” in 2017. The other for Best R&B Album for her self-titled album in 2009 – as well as a Daytime Emmy to carry out a VR production – an animated movie “Baby Yaga”.
Coincidentally, this year’s 71st Tony Awards hosted fellow Academy Award-winning supporting actress Ariana DeBose, who took home the award this year for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.”
“A Strange Loop” entered the awards show on Sunday night as a beloved one, gathering momentum from rave reviews and an eager fan base. Pulitzer Prize winner Michael R. Jackson topped the field, receiving 11 nominations in all categories, including L Morgan Lee for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, making Lee the first transgender person to be nominated for a Tony Award.
