SALT LAKE CITY — The unpredictable happened to many teams in Week 5.
In all, six of the Associated Press’ top 25 teams lost games this week, though there were a few more teams that probably should have lost on a tumultuous college football weekend.
Below are the ballots I provided to The Associated Press that will be counted in the consensus rankings to be released Sunday afternoon.
1. Alabama
It doesn’t seem like the coach matters, Alabama is still unstoppable. The Crimson Tide looked like they were going to beat a good Georgia team, but they allowed some drama at the end, including a 75-yard touchdown and a late interception to hold off the Bulldogs.
Alabama’s offensive thinking is a scary thought. Alabama’s win over Georgia is also better than Texas’ win over Michigan, giving the Crimson Tide the edge for first place.
2. Texas
Without Quinn Ewers under center, the Texans still get the job done with Arch Manning — weird, I know. Texas faced more adversity against a Mississippi State team, but came away with a comfortable win — even if it was well below the betting spread. But who is asking?
3. Ohio State
Jeremiah Smith, who is only 17 years old and plays all over the field, is impossible to stop. The Buckeyes handled Michigan State on the road, which is what we expected. The schedule is still a bit easy for the Buckeyes, but wins are wins.
4. Tennessee
Tennessee won the bye week, with teams falling around them. But don’t let that distract from the fact that the Vols remain a force in the SEC — at least for now.
5. Georgia
For a long time, I literally had to wonder (somewhat seriously) if Georgia would be any good this year. Being afraid of Kentucky was one thing, but getting beaten by Alabama was a bit unexpected. However, the Bulldogs made it a game to show that there is still a lot to like about Georgia. But Kirby Smart officially has a problem at Alabama — even without Nick Saban as coach.
6. Pennsylvania
Against a good, undefeated Illinois team, Penn State allowed just one touchdown in the first quarter, then held Illinois scoreless the rest of the way. The Nittany Lions aren’t a perfect team, but they were good enough against good teams.
7. Oregon
Oregon State’s first Big Ten win came against…UCLA. It may have been a popular opponent since the Pac-12 days, but the Ducks looked good at doing just that. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for three touchdowns and 278 yards on 41 attempts. The path is sure to get tougher for Oregon in Big Ten play.
8. Notre Dame
After a bad loss to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame is a much different team. Against a top-ranked Louisville team, Notre Dame managed 21 points in the first quarter to take the lead. But it got a little more difficult as the Irish only put up 10 more points the rest of the way.
9. Missouri
Missouri had a bye this weekend and benefited from losing teams around it in the rankings. In my opinion, it’s still unclear whether Missouri is as good as this ranking, but I’m willing to take a chance for now.
10. Miami
Miami’s top-10 ranking after this weekend may seem like a stretch, even though it’s down three spots from the previous week. The Hurricanes likely would have lost to Virginia Tech (19-point underdog) had it not been for a wild Hail Mary attempt being ruled incomplete, but Miami remained undefeated. They remain my top team in the ACC, although they have slipped a bit.
Absence from work: Oklahoma State
