Anti-monarchy group welcomes Charles and Camilla on ‘farewell tour’
An Australian anti-monarchy group has welcomed the imminent visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to the country, but claimed it should be their “farewell tour”.
The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) said the visit, which begins on Friday (October 18), will give the British royal family “an opportunity to bid farewell to the monarchy.”
“Welcome to the Monarchy The Farewell Oz tour,” ARM co-president Esther Anatolytis said on Twitter/X.
“It is time to bid farewell to the monarchy. This week’s visit is a valuable opportunity for us to ask the question we have been asking for many years: Why does Australia still have a king?
“Does it make sense for our head of state to inherit this position by birth and not here for Australians full time?
“By all means, let’s welcome Charles and Camilla to Australia, but let’s see this as the last visit of a sitting monarch. It has a lot of meaning.”
