BOSTON – It’s hard to do something for the first time on a ballpark that’s been around for 111 years.

But on Wednesday night, something happened at Fenway Park that 40-year-old veteran radio host Joe Castiglione hasn’t seen before.

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning of a 4-3 Red Sox victory, Royals quarterback Kyle Isbell hit a 96.6 mph rocket off the Beast. Good, inside the monster. Red Sox left fielder Masataka Yoshida ran back and hit the wall. When he stood up, Yoshida looked left, right, and back, but realized that the ball was nowhere to be found.

“I realized I missed catching the ball, but then I tried to find the ball, but it was nowhere,” Yoshida said through translator Kiichiro Wakabayashi. “So that was a surprise.”

A broken red light bulb used to denote the number of overs on Fenway’s manual scoreboard revealed that the ball had hit and stuck inside the lamp.

“I’ve never seen that before, not even at BP,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We overstep the rules and they always talk about if the ball is stuck in the monster and I say, ‘That’s not going to happen. But she did.

The hit was ruled a double-base, and Royals third baseman Matt Duffy, who ran home from first on the fumble, was sent to third to take a Kansas City run.

The rest of the Fenway members, including every player on the field, joined Yoshida in his confusion until it became clear what had happened.

“I thought maybe she hit him and then got stuck under the Beast or something,” said Red Sox writer Nick Pivita. “I didn’t realize she had gone through the light…. I thought it was kind of a lucky break to be honest with you. [Isbel] Put a good swing on a good fastball.”

Pevita, who threw the pitch that Jezebel settled the Beast, said the play reminded him of the ball hit by Kevin Kiermayer in Game 3 of the 2021 ALDS between the Rays and Red Sox. In that game, Kiermayer hit a ball from Pivita that bounced off the wall at right center, off outfielder Hunter Renfro and into Boston. The hit was ruled a ground-rule double, which prevented Yandy Diaz from hitting the go-ahead hit in the top of the 13th inning.

Although the stakes weren’t high for Wednesday’s game, it was another night where the Fenway Park Dodgers stole the show.

Royals quarterback Jordan Lyles said, “It was a weird situation. I’ve never seen that before. Nobody’s seen it, I don’t think. Luckily the guy trying to get that ball didn’t hurt himself. Just a little weird Fenway twisty thing.” .
