Latest British Open final round live updates, standings: Billy Horshill leads crowded field as he chases first major title at Royal Troon

Billy Horschel is as close as he’s ever been to a major championship.

Horshill survived a tough round on Saturday to take the lead in the final round of the British Open on Sunday. He will start the day four under par, giving him a one-stroke lead at the Royal Troon Championship in Scotland.

This is the seventh time Horschel has held at least a share of the lead at the 54-hole mark. He has converted three of the previous six into titles. The last six major winners have also held at least a share of the lead at the 54-hole mark.

Despite being in great shape, the Claret Trophy is still up for grabs. Horschel will start with Thriston Lawrence, one of six players a stroke behind him at 3-under. World No. 1 Scotty Scheffler is second, and Shane Lowry, who has been in contention all week, starts at 3-under.

  • John Rahm: Too little, too late?

This has been a momentous season for Jon Rahm: He finished 45th in his Masters title defense, failed to make the playoffs at the PGA Championship, and withdrew from the U.S. Open. He also struggled early in the Open. But on Sunday, he started the day with three straight birdies to get to -1, three shots off the lead. Unfortunately, he then failed to convert either hole, but he did make a birdie on the seventh to get to -2. He’ll need to keep that form going into the closing holes to make any progress.

  • The wind is blowing

Flags stand at attention and their sticks bowed as the leaders begin their rounds.

World No. 1 Scotty Scheffler gave up on tee 1 just before the green, but managed to make a par. Shane Lowery made a par from a sand hole on the side of the green.

Only two groups left to play.

  • Justin Thomas just fired himself.

So, you start the day just four shots off the lead. By the time you head to the second tee, you’re seven shots behind. That’s how Justin Thomas started his round with a three-putt on the first hole. Here’s how it happened:

    First: OB

    Second: The penalty

    Third: The corridor hole

Fourth: The field is 11 yards.

    Fifth: Green

    Sixth: Short strike

    Seventh: The hole

  • Jason Day gives back

Well, after making it to Turn 32, Day hit a bogey on the 10th hole, returning to his normal form. It’s worth noting that the back holes were more difficult than the front holes all week.

  • Don’t sleep on John Rahm

Three holes, three birdies for Ram, who scored -1. What a great start for the Spaniard.

  • Jason Day tries to post early number

By the time Billy Horschel and Threston Lawrence start playing in an hour, Jason Day will be just a few holes away from finishing his round. Why does that matter? Because Day just made it to 32, 4-under par for his round. He’s now in par for the tournament, just four shots behind. If he can score more birdies and make an early number, he could be in surprisingly good shape if the weather wreaks havoc as the day progresses.

  • weather las vegas

The rain and strong winds that dominated and often disrupted the third round have given way to milder grey skies and more manageable (for now) breezes in Scotland. There are birdies to be had – Ryan Fox is already in the clubhouse with a 67-under par – but rain is on the way and is expected to arrive around the time the leaders start hitting.

Nine players have a three-stroke lead over leader Billy Horschel. Who is the favorite to win in Vegas?

That would be Xander Schoeffel at +350, followed by Scotty Scheffler (+375), and then Horschel at +550.

For Schauffele, this will be his second major of the season after going undefeated in 26 matches. Scheffler is looking for his third major title and his first outside Augusta. Horschel is still looking for his first major title.

  • Historical Ace of Si Woo Kim

Not only did Si Woo Kim birdie the first hole of the tournament on Saturday, he also hit the longest ace in British Open history.
