Man lost at sea rescued thanks to his Apple Watch
As reported by the Australian newspaper News lettersSherman was surfing at Tallow Beach when he got caught in a crash zone where the waves were breaking. “I got hit by two big waves on my head and was under the water for a while, and I started to panic a little bit and convulse under the water there,” Sherman said.
Although Sherman has extensive surfing and swimming experience, he realized he was in trouble after unsuccessfully trying to find a channel to get him back to shore. “It became clear after about 20 minutes that I wasn’t going to be able to get back and I needed some help,” he said.
Since his partner on the beach thought the surfer had gone shopping, no one was really looking for him. But Sherman was wearing Apple Watch Ultrawhich has a built-in cellular connection. He then called the Australian emergency services, who stayed on the line for an hour until the rescue team arrived.
“At this point I was too far out to sea, I was being hit by the wind and the big waves, and it was very difficult to make use of them. [the watch]“I had to hold him up to my ear to hear what was going on and talk to the responder.” But despite the challenges, Sherman was rescued and is now in good condition.
Apple Watch has been certified water resistant to 50 meters since Series 2. With Apple Watch Ultrawhich has a more robust design to withstand the most challenging scenarios you can imagine, and water resistance has been increased to a depth of 100 meters.
One lifeguard on the beach said the Apple Watch was a game changer in the rescue, as an operation like this on the high seas can take hours or even days. “It’s amazing that I was able to use this technology to save my life,” Sherman said of his Apple Watch.
