New York, September 16 (EFE).- Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, has banned the TV news channel RT (Russia Today) and other Russian state media from its sites, “after careful consideration,” it said. They participate in intervention activities in other countries.
“Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related companies are now banned from our apps worldwide for foreign interference,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
Meta’s decision comes days after the US government announced sanctions against Moscow-controlled RT and other media outlets.
The Biden administration also announced it was launching a diplomatic effort to alert the international community to what US officials described as RT’s role as a “full member of the intelligence apparatus.”
“Our most powerful antidote to Russia’s lies is the truth,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told reporters on Friday.
The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced the indictment of two RT employees for allegedly paying a U.S. company nearly $10 million to create and amplify content aligned with Russian interests amid the U.S. presidential campaign.
US media reported that RT had 7.2 million followers on Facebook and one million followers on Instagram before the ban was announced.
According to CNN channel. Executives from Meta, Microsoft and Google-owned Alphabet have been called to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee this Wednesday about their platforms’ work to combat foreign threats to US elections. EFE
