An investigation into manslaughter has been opened following the deaths of seven people on board the Bayezid yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily.
Italian prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio of the nearby town of Termini Imerese said his office had opened a preliminary investigation into manslaughter and the sinking of the ship due to negligence. No suspects have yet been identified.
At a press conference, prosecutors were asked about the responsibilities of the Bayzi crew given that all but one of its members survived.
Prosecutors said they were “focusing on this aspect in particular.”
They want to “discover how much they knew and how much all people were able to do.” [passengers] “They were warned.”
This comes as condolences have poured in for Hannah Lynch, who died with her father on the luxury yacht.
Sasha Murray, chief steward of the Baysian, which is believed to have been rescued from the yacht, described Hannah as a “jewel in a sea of stars”.
“What most people didn’t see was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she had with her parents, whom she adored more than anything else,” she added.
Also killed on the boat were Morgan Stanley Chairman Jonathan Plummer and his wife Judith Plummer, and Clifford Chance attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife Nida Morvillo.
Timeline of the Sicilian luxury yacht disaster: Monday 19 – Wednesday 21 August
- The British-flagged yacht Bayswater sank at around 5am local time when a cyclone hit the area.
- Fifteen people were rescued from the 55-metre (180-foot) vessel – including a mother and her child – but seven others remain missing.
- A body, believed to be that of one of the cooks on board, was later found near the wreckage.
- The search for the six missing tourists continues.
- Among those missing were Morgan Stanley International CEO Jonathan Plummer and his wife, Judy Plummer, and Clifford Chance attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife, Nida Morvillo, reports said.
- Police divers are trying to reach the hull of the ship, which is at a depth of 50 metres.
- Early searches for the wreckage were “unsuccessful” due to difficulty accessing the bridge and furniture blocking the walkways, Italy’s fire department Vigili del Foco said.
- The search for the six missing people has entered its third day, with crews conducting inspections of the yacht’s interior.
- A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrives at Porticello to inspect the sinking site.
- Five bodies were found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon, and only four were pulled ashore.
- The picture shows body bags being transported to Porticello port in the afternoon, where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

ICYMI: Bayesian accident is ‘extremely serious tragedy’, prosecutor says
A top Sicilian prosecutor has revealed the order in which the bodies of six people missing after a yacht sank were recovered, describing the incident as a “very serious tragedy”.
“These six people who desperately tried to save themselves have finally been found,” said prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio.
“First, four of them were pulled out. Jonathan Bloomer, the banker, Christopher Morvillo, the lawyer, all four of them from inside the yacht, which was 50 metres down.
“Then, later, the other two were also recovered.
Michael Lynch on the 23rd of this month, yesterday, and then Michael Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was found yesterday morning.
“It is a very serious tragedy and in order to reduce the dimensions of the tragedy we have asked for the cooperation of the firefighters and fire divers who have shown incredible courage and skill, doing a very difficult job and allowing us to properly examine the wreckage for bodies.”

Summary: Prosecutors say the passengers were asleep and therefore unable to escape.
Prosecutors said the passengers who died were likely asleep, which is why they failed to escape.
“They were asleep while the others were not,” said Rafael Cammarano, the prosecutor in the case.
He was asked if there was anyone available at that time to alert them.
“This is exactly what we are trying to ascertain through the statements made by the survivors during their interrogation – a key point in the investigation, of course,” Mr Cammarano said.

Diver describes tragic conditions aboard Bayesian shipwreck
One diver described the emotional moment the last body was recovered from the Bayesian wreckage as everyone stopped to applaud when Hannah Lynch reached shore.
“It was an emotional release, a stress reliever,” said Inspector Vincenzo Nardone, a diver recruited from the Naples fire brigade.
“Because stress is our daily bread. We act when needed and in emergencies, and we intervene immediately. So stress is our baggage, it is what we carry with us.”
“We had to look at the scene from a different angle than we normally see it, and that made everything more difficult,” he added.
“We entered the tight spaces, after assessing the safest point to enter the yacht. We found the safest place and entered from there.
“But inside it was very confusing, with wardrobes and furniture scattered around us, and lots of mirrors reflecting our lights back at us.
“The bodies were crammed into tight spaces, with furniture on top of them or next to them. They were all stuck there.”

Why were the passengers who remained on board not warned to escape from the yacht?
The prosecutor in charge of the case, Rafael Cammarano, indicated that some of the passengers may have been asleep while others were awake.
When asked why they were not awakened or alerted, he said investigators were trying to find out from survivors’ statements.
He described it as an “essential” part of the investigation.

Fire chief reveals final moments of seven who died in Bayesian tragedy
The chief of the fire brigade has revealed the final moments of the seven people who died in the Baysian tragedy. British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven people who died after the Baysian yacht sank near Porticello at around 5am local time on Monday (August 19). A manslaughter investigation has now been launched. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday (August 24), Palermo fire brigade chief Bentivoglio Fiandra explained more about what is believed to have happened on board the yacht. Mr Fiandra said: “The Baysian sank stern first and then capsized on its starboard side. “As a result, the victims tried to move to the left side of the boat, where the last pockets of air remained.”

Why were there several passengers in one cabin?
The press conference reported that several bodies were found on board the sunken yacht in one cabin that was not theirs.
Cammarano said investigators do not yet know why they were found in the same cabin.
The head of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht had drifted to the right, and that people had tried to go to the other side, taking refuge in cabins on the upper part of the wreck.
