Nick Viall And his wife, Natalie JoyThey were so excited to celebrate their recent nuptials with a tropical honeymoon in the Turks and Caicos Islands until a “nightmare” travel experience ruined their plans.
“We don't sleep [and] “We brought Natalie's mom with us to babysit on our honeymoon with a logistical goal, as far as spending all our time with our daughter and loving every minute of it, but it's the honeymoon,” Viall, 43, said during the Thursday, May 2, episode of his show “vial files” Podcast. “We were hoping to connect and have some fun, and we are so lucky to have Natalie's mom [come with us.]”
Viall, Joy, 25, and her mother, along with baby River Rose, 3 months, traveled to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Once their plane landed and they headed to the customs checkpoint, their itinerary hit a snag.
“We have a nice trip, River is fine [and] We arrive at the Turks and Caicos Islands. [Our] “The honeymoon is about to start,” recalls the former Bachelor. “We go as a family to the customs checkpoint or something [and] Go to the agent and hand them all our passports.
After Joey's mother stamped her travel documents, she moved to get the group's luggage. However, the newlyweds remained waiting for their passports to be stamped.
He said: “The agent stamps the passport, and we do not know which passport it is at this stage.” “[They are] About to return it, he looks at it and says, “There's a torn page here.” And we're like, “Huh?” I don't know.'”
Viall and Joy were then taken to a private room, where they were told they were not allowed to enter the country because a page of Joy's passport was torn.
“This was a real moment where Nick and I came together — not only did we have a river in our arms that we had to hold together for our daughter — but it was also a real challenge for us as husband and wife,” Joy said. “It was the first thing we had to overcome as husband and wife.”
At the time, Joy was “crying” that her honeymoon had been cut short while Viall tried to remain calm.
“I was like, 'It's going to be okay.' “We'll get some sort of lecture and obviously we'll be fine,” Viall added, revealing that they were then informed that they would be sent back to the US.[The agent] He looked at me and said, “Are you still going to your hotel?” I say to myself: “I will not leave my wife.”
He continued: “Natalie is crying and I look calm but I'm worried. I'm telling myself: You've got two days on the damn job. Time to be a husband. It's time to move on and stay calm. Everything's going to be okay.”
Vial also confirmed that “at that moment” the situation seemed “like a nightmare.”
“We have booked these non-refundable rooms [tickets]. “We went for it,” he added through tears. “We decided to invest in a honeymoon and…it was so chaotic; [but] I have had many opportunities to call Natalie my wife and it has been wonderful. I was saying to myself: “I will not leave my wife, I brought my wife here.”
Viall, Joy and their family members have been rebooked on the “next departure flight”. However, after the plane was delayed for six hours, the flight was canceled following a maintenance issue. Delta Airlines put the group up at a local hotel for the night.
“It could have been a lot worse [and] “We had a one-night stand,” Viall said, talking excitedly as they ate their honeymoon dinner in the airport hotel restaurant.
Viall and Joy are now planning a second honeymoon in the near future but have not yet decided on an itinerary.
