Perdue Recalls 167,000 Pounds of Chicken Parts Due to Metal Contamination

NEW YORK (AP) — Check your freezer. Perdue Foods Inc. said it is recalling more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets after some customers reported finding metal wire embedded in the products.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service and Purdue have determined that about 167,171 pounds (75,827 kilograms) of the products may be contaminated with a foreign substance after receiving an unspecified number of customer complaints. In an announcement Friday, the Maryland-based company said the substance “has been identified in a limited number of consumer packages.”

“The company later determined that the substance was a very fine strand of metal wire that was inadvertently introduced during the manufacturing process,” Jeff Shaw, Purdue’s senior vice president of food safety and quality, said in a prepared statement. Shaw added that Purdue has decided to recall all affected packages “out of an abundance of caution.”

No injuries or adverse reactions associated with consuming these products have been confirmed to date, according to FSIS and Perdue. However, FSIS is concerned that the products may be in consumers’ refrigerators.
