The Prince of Wales has returned to public duties after his wife had abdominal surgery and his father was diagnosed with cancer.

Prince William held an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday and will appear at a charity event this evening.

It comes after a three-week absence from duties, which began after Catherine, Princess of Wales, underwent surgery.

Prince William is expected to take on an enhanced role in the King's absence.

His father's “regular treatments” for his unspecified cancer, during which the king will not be able to attend public events, began on Monday.

While Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King will continue to perform his official constitutional duties, Prince William will act on his behalf in some engagements.

The princess continues her recovery at home after spending two weeks in the hospital after undergoing surgery.

According to palace sources, Prince William has so far been focusing on being with his wife and children, rather than making public engagements.

But with an “unwavering commitment to duty and service”, he will now return to his public role with an inauguration and an air ambulance fundraising event later on Wednesday.

The investments – where people receive honors personally from a member of the Royal Family – will reflect his support for people who play an important role in their communities.

Among the people he will meet is Susie Hutchinson, who runs Little Heart Matters, a charity for people with monoventricular heart disease – or half a functioning heart.

John Broadfoot, founder of SOS Kit Aid, whose charity sends used sports equipment to disadvantaged people around the world, will also be honoured.

He will also meet the record goalscorer for the England women's football team, Ellen Convery (formerly known as Ellen White).

Diagnosis of King Charles Cancer

He was photographed sitting next to the Queen in the back of a car leaving Clarence House in London as they headed to their home in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Earlier in the day, the king spent 45 minutes with the Duke of Sussex, who traveled from Los Angeles after his father informed him of his cancer diagnosis over the phone.
