San Diego ranked among the 150 best places to live in 2022 - NBC 7 San Diego

America’s Best City may not actually be amazing — at least according to an annual report on the Best Cities to Live in the US, which brought San Diego very close to the bottom this year.

US News & World Report analyzed 150 of the country’s most populous metro areas to determine the best places to live and retire. San Diego Ranked 105 and 138 respectively, below cities like Reno and Nevada; Boise, Idaho; and Jacksonville, Florida.

Roy Toft has filmed video and still photos of coyotes, California gray fox, birds of prey, lynx, opossum, skunk, deer, and raccoon at his property in East County.

why did you do San Diego is very low?

The ratings were based on public data and user opinions in 5 categories on a weighted scale: quality of life (32.5%), value (25%), labor market (20%), desirability (17.5%) and immigration (5%).

San Diego hasn’t scored well in any category.

Although US News contributor Darcy Brown has described San Diego favorably for its weather, beaches, outdoor activities, dining, and recreation, the desire And quality of life The scores remained moderate with 7.6 and 7.2, respectively.

The quality of life index is also the most comprehensive, taking into account crime rates, access to health care, education, well-being, air quality and commute time in its assessment.

Not surprisingly, however, housing costs have been keeping us low on the list. San Diego was close to the lowest score in the value which compares housing costs to median household income to give San Diego a score of 3.3. The national average for housing in 2021 was $365,616, while the San Diego average was 889,225 (which we know, of course). It will be much higher for 2022).

“Living in San Diego is not particularly affordable,” Brown wrote. San Diegan is willing to pay these high prices, though, and they often refer to the cost-of-living differentials as the ‘sunshine tax’, or the price of enjoying a year-round temperate climate.

The job market The category, which assessed the unemployment rate and median salary to create a ranking, scored San Diego with a score of 6.2, not too far from the city that ranked first for the best place to live — Huntsville, Alabama — with a score of 7.2.

San Diego is also ranked very low in net migrationwith a score of 4.6, but that is only 5% of the total score.

Huntsville, Alabama, has the highest honors, mostly thanks to high ratings in value and job market indicators.

The top 10 ranked cities on the list were:

  1. Huntsville, Alabama
  2. Colorado Springs, Colorado
  3. Green Bay, Wisconsin
  4. Boulder, Colorado
  5. San Jose, California
  6. Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina
  7. Fayetteville, Arkansas
  8. Portland, Maine
  9. Sarasota, Florida
  10. San Francisco, California

If it’s any consolation, San Diego ranked third when compared only to other California metro areas, behind San Jose and San Francisco.

US News says the data used in its rankings comes from sources such as the US Census Bureau, the FBI, the US Department of Labor, and its own internal resources. This data is then categorized into five indicators that are then weighted based on a survey of Americans asked what they value when choosing where to live. Learn more about the methodology here.
