Sources – New York Jets’ Haason Reddick won’t join camp due to trade

FLOURHOME PARK, N.J. — New York Jets defensive lineman Haason Reddick, who did not get the new contract he was seeking, does not plan to report to training camp with the rest of his team on Tuesday, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Redick is in the final year of his contract and is set to make $14.5 million this season.

Reddick will be fined $50,000 per day during his strike, according to the collective bargaining agreement. The fine cannot be waived.

In an attempt to extend his contract, Reddick decided to skip the entire postseason, including the mandatory training camp in June. The New York Jets were caught off guard by Reddick’s stance, even though his team made it clear before the deal that it wanted a new contract.

In 2022, Reddick signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Eagles. With 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons, fourth-most in the NFL, he felt he outdid himself on the deal. His $15 million per year average ranks 20th among edge players, according to ESPN’s roster management system.

At the time of the deal, the Jets were under the impression that Redick, who turns 30 on Sept. 22, was content to play out the final year of his contract and head into the free agent market. Maybe there was a misunderstanding, or maybe Redick changed his mind. Either way, it was strange for both sides.

Reddick will play a key role for the New York Jets, who are third in yards allowed in 2023. He will start on a four-man defense led by linebacker Quinnen Williams. With Reddick, the New York Jets have their best offensive player on the edge in 20 years.

The New York Jets acquired Reddick after losing Bryce Huff, the franchise record holder for touchdowns, to the Eagles in the free agency window. The Jets traded Reddick for a conditional third-round pick in 2026; the pick improves to a second-round pick if he plays 67.5 percent of games and records at least 10 touchdowns in 2024.

With Reddick ready to start, the New York Jets, citing financial reasons, traded defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers to the Denver Broncos in April.
