Tesla has issued two recalls for the Cybertruck, the third and fourth, since the model was introduced late last year.
The latest recall, which covers nearly all of the roughly 12,000 trucks on the road so far, includes the truck’s oversized windshield wiper and a piece of plastic along the edge of the truck bed.
A piece of black plastic running along the edge of the truck’s bed wall can come loose and detach from the vehicle while it’s being driven.
“If the trim becomes detached from the vehicle while driving, it could create a road hazard for motorists to follow and increase their risk of injury or collision,” according to documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
The problem arose when the part was missing from a Cybertruck that was transported to the delivery center on a motor carrier, according to NHTSA documents. An investigation conducted by Tesla revealed that the part was not installed correctly. Further investigation revealed more cases of trim pieces becoming loose due to incorrect installation. Some of these cases were on Cybertrucks and delivered to customers.
Cybertruck owners will be asked to bring their trucks to a Tesla service center where the part will be replaced or properly installed using “adhesion booster” and pressure-sensitive tape. Tesla will begin notifying owners of the recalled vehicles in mid-August.
The trucks are also being recalled for a separate problem with the electric motor that powers the truck’s massive windshield wiper. Some motors were damaged during testing in a way that could allow excessive electrical current to pass through the motor, causing it to malfunction.
Tesla has previously recalled the Cybertruck for other issues. In April, the trucks were recalled Because the accelerator pedal may become stuck. In January, Tesla issued a software recall for 2.2 million vehicles, including Cybertrucks, because the letters on the warning lights were too small to be easily read. This issue was fixed with an over-the-air software update.
