A French pilot who decapitated his plane with his plane’s wing has been found guilty of manslaughter.
Nicolas Galli, 40, an aeronautical engineer and experienced skydiver, was struck by the plane’s wing seconds after jumping over the French countryside in July 2018.
It was the pilot He was convicted of manslaughter The French newspaper Le Parisien reported that the Criminal Court in Montauban ruled on Tuesday to operate a plane without a valid pilot’s license.
He was sentenced to a 12-month suspended prison sentence and banned from flying for a year.
Emanuel Frank, a lawyer for the victim’s family, criticized the pilot for “a lot of recklessness and negligence” at a hearing on September 19.
The president of the court also said that there was a lack of communication between the victim and the pilot.
The retired pilot, who has not been named but has been identified in previous reports as Alan C., was previously a master pilot at a local skydiving school, the Midi-Pyrénées Skydiving School Association.
Le Parisien said that the court imposed a fine of about $22,000 on the school, but half of it was suspended.
The single-engine plane was carrying Galley, a second pilot, and several paratroopers over the Pollock-en-Quercy area, according to a report by the Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Office. Previously seen by Insider.
Wing pilots are skydivers who jump while wearing a wetsuit with webbed sleeves, which allows for a longer glide in the air compared to free fall.
Galli was the last person to jump from the plane, after which the pilot began a rapid descent, according to the report.
Le Parisien newspaper reported that the pilot and the wingsuit pilots did not discuss the path the plane would take, and the plane caught up with Jali and hit him.
Investigators said Galli was killed, causing his emergency parachute to deploy.
A camera mounted on the helmet of another pilot wearing a wingsuit captured the incident, and officials said they used the footage in their investigation.
The pilot had previously defended himself and told the court about this He didn’t think he was wrong The Times of London reported that Galli had died.
“I think my itinerary was logical. This was the tragedy of my life, but I’m not wrong,” he said.
“Compared to parachutists who are in free fall, it is more complicated with paratroopers who walk more in a straight line,” he said. “They don’t land very often and can interfere with the plane.”
