The White House has accused “right-wing critics” of selectively editing videos in a “misinformation” campaign to cast doubt on President Joe Biden’s mental state.
In the latest incident, Biden’s opponents claimed he faced a moment of confusion that required Barack Obama to lead him off the stage at a fundraiser over the weekend.
The White House shared other footage that they said showed Biden pausing to enjoy the applause.
The mental capacity of both Biden, 81, and his rival, Donald Trump, 78, has come under scrutiny as the race for the White House intensifies.
However, poll after poll suggests that Biden’s age and abilities are receiving greater scrutiny from voters.
“It tells you everything we need to know about how desperate Republicans are here,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at Monday’s daily news conference.
She told reporters, “These videos have been manipulated [are] “It was done in bad faith.”
The White House spokeswoman was responding to a question about a party hosted by Biden in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
The event was headlined by George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Julia Roberts and late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel.
Conservative media published a clip of Biden standing on the stage, before Obama grabbed his arm and they left together.
The New York Post reported that Biden “appeared to freeze” at the end of the event and “Obama had to be escorted off the stage.”
Trump shared the clip on his platform, Truth Social, and commented, “Is this really who you want to be your president?”
But the president’s allies pointed to longer clips that show Biden smiling and apparently receiving applause from the audience.
Jean-Pierre said the incident showed that Obama and Biden “have a relationship. They are friends. They are like family to each other.”
The White House press secretary also criticized the newspaper’s recent framing of another Biden clip.
The newspaper reported last week that the president “began wandering off during a skydiving demonstration” in Italy on Thursday, and that other G7 leaders “need to bring him back into focus.”
But British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told The Telegraph that the US president was simply “very polite and went to speak to everyone.” [the parachute jumpers] Individually,” before Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told him they would all line up to shake hands.
The interaction clip that was widely shared on X, formerly Twitter, has a community note attached, indicating that the video has been cropped.
Meanwhile, Biden allies are seizing on Trump videos to say it is the Republican nominee who lacks mental clarity.
Biden, a Democrat, is preparing to face Trump in their first televised debate of the year later this month. The White House elections will be held in November.
