USMNT Live Roster Q&A: Ask our experts your questions about the Copa America Camp Team
The U.S. men’s national team’s training camp roster ahead of the Copa America is filled with 2022 World Cup veterans, a reminder of the continuity and substance of a group that has high expectations around it this cycle — including the summer tournament and the 2022 World Cup. The 2026 World Cup is in two years.
The list includes 18 players who were part of the tournament that was held in Qatar two years ago, including stars Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah.
Gregg Berhalter also opted for experience on the depth chart, most notably with goaltender Sean Johnson and right back Shaq Moore. That suggests this summer’s Olympic tournament has likely affected the roster of young players on the fringes of this American team, including left winger Kevin Paredes, goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and right back Brian Reynolds. Moore essentially steps into the roster spot vacated by Serginio Dest after Dest suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in training with PSV Eindhoven a few weeks ago.
The average age of the roster will be 25 years and 202 days as of the first day of practice on May 29.
Interestingly, Berhalter also included four strikers in this 27-man squad: Ricardo Pepe, Folarin Balogun, and World Cup veterans Josh Sargent and Haji Wright. It is possible that Wright’s ability to play as a winger influenced the ability to include all four players.
The Copa America roster can include only 26 players, so one player from the two friendly matches against Colombia on June 8 and Brazil on June 12 will not be part of the summer tournament squad. The final roster will be announced sometime after the Brazil friendly match.
These friendly matches will represent huge tests for the United States. The USA faces the two teams with the longest winless streak in program history: Brazil (11 games) and Colombia (seven games).
Should they appear in a friendly match in June, Malik and Timmy Tillmans will become the ninth set of brothers to play for the USMNT in the same match, and the first since Kane and Steve Snow against Costa Rica on June 14, 1988. The Tillmans become the 10th set of brothers to appear for the USMNT when they appear Timmy made his debut last January against Slovenia.
