Yankees vs. Guardians, live updates: Cleveland aims to tie the series in ALCS Game 4

Cleveland fans won’t soon forget the Guardians’ epic Game 3 win over the Yankees on Thursday night, which was punctuated by hard-hitting hits from Junkinse Noel and David Frye. But they don’t have much time to enjoy the win, as Game 4 takes place on Friday and the Guardians are still staring at a 2-1 series deficit.

Both rookie pitchers were making their postseason debuts in this game: Louis Gale for the Yankees (3.50 ERA in 151 2/3 innings this season) and Gavin Williams for the Guardians (4.86 ERA in 76 innings).

Will the Rangers have more magic after Thursday’s heroics? They have been strong at home this season and have the momentum coming from their win in Game 3. We’ll find out soon enough.

  • Giancarlo Stanton launched a 3-run homer

Cade Smith took over for Eli Wilson in the top of the sixth and had a disastrous inning. After walking Juan Soto on five pitches, he gave up a single to Aaron Judge. Jazz Chisholm Jr. moves on. Runners to second and third place on a sacrifice bunt.

Giancarlo Stanton then gave the Yankees a 6-2 lead, crushing a fastball over the plate into the left field seats. And he knew it.

    Smith out Tim Herren.

  • No runs for the Guardians in the bottom of the fifth

Tim Hill gives up a single to Jose Ramirez, but hits Josh Naylor to end the bottom of the fifth inning.

Game 3 walk-off hero David Frye hit a pinch hit for Kyle Manzardo. Presumably he will remain in the DH lineup.

  • Eli Morgan retires the Yankees in order

Eli Morgan takes over for Cleveland in the top of the fifth and runs through the Yankees in order.

Austin Wells strikes out, Alex Verdugo drops to second (swinging at a pitch too low and in), and Gleyber Torres flies out to center.

Tim Hill is now pitching for the Yankees as the Rangers come into the bottom of the inning.

  • Luis Gil gets the fourth inning 1-2-3

Left-handers Tim Maiza and Tim Hill warm up in the Yankees bullpen.

This seemed to indicate that Louis Gil had thrown his last inning of the game. But he retired Andres Giménez, Austin Hedges and Brian Rocchio in order to finish fourth.

  • Eric Sabrowski led off scoreless in the fourth

Eric Sabrowski struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton to start the fourth inning. Anthony Rizzo hits a single to left field, but Anthony Volpe flies to center field.

This could be Sabrosky’s final inning. Eli Wilson warms up on the Guardians’ bullpen.

  • Luis Gil hits Daniel Schneemann

Luis Gil finally struck out Daniel Schneemann on a nine-pitch shutout to end the third inning. The Guardians left two runners on base and trailed 3-2 and went to the top of the fourth.

  • Louis Gill did not receive a strike call on Thomas Lane

Lane Thomas draws a two-out walk on a close swing call. (On the replay, it looked like Thomas had wandered off, but the call on the field said otherwise.)

Matt Blake comes out to meet Louis Gil before facing Daniel Schneemann.

  • Josh Naylor with an RBI single

Stephen Cowan reaches base for the second time in two plate appearances, hitting a single to lead off the bottom of the third. He moved to second base with a steal.

Lewis Gil had Kyle Manzardo fly to right field and Jose Ramirez to step up to second base. But Josh Naylor slapped a single into left field to drive in Cowan and cut the Yankees’ lead to 3-2.

  • Eric Sabrowski directs Soto and Judge

Eric Sabrowski makes Stephen Vogt look good, getting Juan Soto to first base and hitting Aaron Judge to top off third.

  • A radical change for Guardians

Gavin Williams exited after 2 1/3 innings. He got Gleyber Torres to go to third base, then gave manager Steven Vogt the starting hook.

Eric Sabrowski takes over for Cleveland with one out in the third.

Williams gave up three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Four Yankees hit batters.

  • Luis Gill pitches a scoreless bottom at second

Bryan Rocchio hit a fly ball into the left field wall, but Alex Verdugo caught it for the third out of the third inning.

Louis Gill walked Austin Hedges but retired the next three batters he faced. Daniel Schneemann grounded out to second base, followed by Andres Gimenez flying out to center.

  • Austin Wells goes deep

The Yankees take a 3-1 lead on Austin Wells’ solo home run.

Gavin Williams looked like he was settling in after wins over Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe. But then he sent a fastball into the middle of the strike zone, and Wells didn’t miss it.

This is Wells’ first homer back on September 9th.

  • Louis Gill holds the Guardians in one round

Louis Gill ended the bottom of the first by getting Josh Naylor to walk out to the catcher in foul territory, then hitting Lane Thomas looking.

  • Jose Ramirez puts Guardians on the board

With runners on first and third and no outs, Jose Ramirez gets the first run for the Rangers with a sacrifice fly.

    Yankees 2, Guardians 1.

  • The first two Cleveland batters reach base

The Guardians get their first hitters on base as well. Stephen Cowan draws a walk, then goes to third on a double from Kyle Manzardo.

Here comes Jose Ramirez without any endings.

  • Gavin Williams singles out after Juan Soto’s homer

After delivering a two-run homer to Juan Soto, Gavin Williams retired the next three batters. Aaron Judge grounded out to shortstop, Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out, and Giancarlo Stanton flied out to right field.

Guardians coming in at the bottom of the first.

  • Juan Soto gives the Yankees a 2-0 lead

The Yankees start Game 4 strong. Gleyber Torres leads off with a single, then Juan Soto crushes a high fastball for a two-run shot.

  • Aaron Boone talks about moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. For cleaning

Flipping Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton at the fourth and fifth spots in the lineup is a strange move. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that he did this to balance left-handed and right-handed hitters through the middle and bottom of the Yankees batting order.

  • Will the Yankees use closer Luke Weaver tonight?

Yankees closer Luke Weaver blew the save in Game 3 on Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits (including a home run) in 1 1/3 innings.

It was Weaver’s third appearance in the series, which included five saves in Game 1. After Thursday’s performance, the question was whether Weaver was tired of his heavy postseason workload.

  • Ranger lineup, Game 4

Same lineup as Game 3 for Cleveland. And why not, although some may wonder why David Fry didn’t start.

Gavin Williams makes his postseason debut for the Guardians. During the regular season, he went 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 76 innings.
