Brighton’s Vintage Streets – Western Road

Nellie the Elephant drawing a crowd at Brighton Station in ca. 1935.

Believe it or not, this a circus procession of elephants slowly plodding down Western Road – Brighton’s biggest shopping area.

This vintage snap was taken between Temple Street and Borough Street in 1899 and it shows; note the gigantic hats of the women in the crowd lining the narrow street, and all the men in Victorian suits.
