Independent Venue Week (IVW) 2017 is fast approaching with cult musician Beans On Toast and London reggae band The Skints amongst those lined up to play special shows Brighton.

Independent Venue Week is a 7 day celebration of small music venues around the UK. The organisers say that the aim is to support the gigs which “give artists their first experience of playing live in front of an audience and for fans, somewhere to get up close to artists that one day, may well be playing stadiums and festival main stages.”

Beans On Toast, who describes his sound as “drunk folk” will be taking things one step further by playing a different venue every night of the celebration, including a gig at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on 27 January.

Each show will cost under ten pounds and will feature a different local support act, he explains: “I’m actually playing a show every night, it’ll be a whistle stop tour of the South to celebrate IVW. Playing with new local acts in each town, which’ll be fun. Apart from that the plan is as usual. Some drinks, some songs and some good times.

“Running a good venue is a work of art in itself and there’s lots of pieces in the puzzle but if I had to put it down to one thing, I’d say the staff. The people that actually run the place. Decent and friendly staff goes a long long way.”

The tour follows the recent release of Beans’ 8th studio album ‘A Spanner in The Works.’ which features new track ‘The Drum Kit’ , a song all about the closing of UK venues.

Other artists visiting the city as part of IVW include Martha Wainwright, Patchwork Natives, and the Skints.

Independent Venue Week began in 2014 and past ambassadors have included Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, Frank Turner, and Wolf Alice.

The initiative is, funded by Arts Council England, brings together breaking and established artists, promoters and labels to create a nationwide series of gigs at the end of January.

A spokesperson for Independent Venue Week says: “These venues are the backbone of the live music scene in this country and Independent Venue Week wants to recognise all that they have done to create some of the most memorable nights of the past so they can continue to do the same in the future.”
