The fashion industry, whilst taking steps in the right direction in terms of inclusivity, are still seriously lagging behind in fashion-forward clothing for Muslim women. However, fashion powerhouse Dolce & Gabbana are taking a step in the right direction with the launch of their hijab and abaya range.
The range aimed at Muslim women launched just this year, and features some gorgeous items, though most are in neutral colours, there are pops of colour in the form of polkadots, flowers and fruit as well as the Dolce & Gabbana signature embroidered lace. Their website said that the collection ‘celebrates the inimitable doce vita that is distinct to us in the Arab world’.
A report by Thomson Reuters found that Muslims spent $266 billion on clothing and footwear in 2013 and this was set to rise by $484 billion by 2019. By not providing items for the fashion conscious Muslim woman, fashion houses are seriously missing out. Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY have launched capsule collections for Muslim customers and high end online retailer Net-a-Porter provides a ‘Ramadan Edit’. Last year, H&M featured their first ever hijab-wearing model in an ad campaign, receiving high praise for doing so.
Hopefully 2016 will be the year fashion designers start sitting up and taking notice that women who choose to wear hijabs are just as fashion conscious as those who do not. You can check out some of the range below.
