Night-time road closures will reduce inconvenience as the council finishes improvements to a busy double junction near Brighton’s Elm Grove and The Level park.
Since the end of August, the authority has been changing junction layouts where Lewes Road meets Elm Grove and Union Road. The aim is to prevent traffic queuing at red lights from obstructing vehicles trying to pass green. Other changes seek to improve the pedestrian and cycle route between Lewes Road, Elm Grove and the Level, where cyclists tend to use pavements to avoid difficult turning movements.
The final five-day phase from Monday 20 November entails new road surfacing and markings. To enable this, certain junctions will be closed between 8pm and 5.30am. Dates and locations are:
- Nights of Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 November – no entry or exit between Lewes Road and Union Road.
- Nights of Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 November – no entry or exit between Lewes Road and Elm Grove.
It is hoped no work will actually be needed on Friday 24 November, but the date will be used if bad weather causes an overrun.
Signed diversions will be in place and drivers urged to find alternative routes. Pedestrian routes will be maintained at all times. Bus journeys could be affected after 8pm and passengers should check with operators.
A letter has been sent to residents and businesses in the area, warning of the works.
