After a very busy spring in which 18 shows opened on Broadway in two months, theatergoers and actors alike were able to breathe and celebrate.

The Tony Awards were presented during a ceremony hosted for the third time by Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose. A few awards were presented during the pre-show Pluto TVfollowed by the main event on CBS and Paramount+.

This Broadway season — which features plays and musicals that opened during the eligibility period between April 28, 2023 and April 25, 2024 — has seen dozens of screen actors take the stage. Most of the winners were first-time Tony nominees, and many made their Broadway debut.

Jeremy Strong won the Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in “An Enemy of the People”; Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony Award (in its fifth Broadway run) for “Merryly We Roll Along”; Sarah Paulson won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play as the combustible Tony Lafayette in Suitable. Kara Young won her first Tony Award for her performance in the comedy Purlie Victorious, making her the first black actress to be nominated for a Tony Award three years in a row.
