Disney is changing up its release calendar, adding a new “Star Wars” movie and live-action “Moana” adaptation to the schedule and delaying the next three “Avatar” movies by a year. At this rate, the fifth flight to Pandora will launch in 2031. That’s in eight years, for anyone who wants to know the math.
Among the highlights of the overhaul: “Moana” will be released on June 27, 2025; “Deadpool 3” moved from November 8, 2024 to May 3, 2024; The untitled “Star Wars” movie will debut on December 18, 2026; “Avatar 3” turned out December 19, 2025; “Avatar 4” to December 21, 2029 and “Avatar 5” to December 19, 2031. Based on this timeline, the final “Avatar” movie comes 22 years after the original 2009 movie.
Other changes include a huge Marvel reshuffle. “Captain America: Brave New World” moves from May 3, 2024 to July 26, 2024, which in turn delays “Thunderbolts” to December 20, 2024, “Blade” to February 14, 2025, and “Fantastic Four” to May 2, 2025. The movie “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” ran for a full year, from May 2, 2025 to May 1, 2026. It replaced “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which jumps from May 1, 2026 to May 7, 2027.
With the addition of “Star Wars” in December 2026, that means there will be two films set in a galaxy far, far away that year. The Star Wars spin-off movie was pushed from December 19, 2025 to May 22, 2026. Another Star Wars movie is scheduled for December 17, 2027. Disney hasn’t made it clear where any of these installments are.
Production delays are part of the reason behind the overhaul of the release plan. Disney recently halted filming on “Blade” and “Thunderbolts,” which has a ripple effect on the rest of the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In terms of “Avatar,” the space between the sequels will allow the visual effects and post-production department to continue to expand, develop, and improve the various ecosystems across the vast Pandora universe.
“Every ‘Avatar’ movie is an exciting yet epic project that takes time to reach the level of quality we as directors strive for and audiences expect,” producer Jon Landau wrote on Twitter. “The team is working hard and can’t wait to bring fans back to Pandora in December 2025.”
