The French Constitutional Council repealed it this Thursday The most controversial measures of President Emmanuel Macron's immigration reformAmong them the establishment of quotas by Parliament, The limitation of family reunification and the creation of the offense of “irregular stay”.
“The Constitutional Council is auditing the 32 articles of the Law to Control Immigration, Promoting Integration, of which there are 86,” the High Court announced, clarifying the interpretation or modifying five articles of this reform that opened a serious crisis in power.
The nine “sages”, known as members of the court, removed restrictions on family reunification, tightened access to social benefits and paid “bonds” for foreign students to return.
Other measures scrapped include the re-introduction of the irregular stay offence, the establishment of immigration quotas by Parliament and the granting of long-term visas to British nationals with secondary residence in France.
The high court thus cut off key measures that Macron's centrist coalition adopted without an absolute majority in parliament against right-wing Republican (LR) opposition to get approval for the controversial reform in December.
