Cavaliers J-Max Strus hits half court to shock Mavericks

The tipped pass was just the beginning of the chaos between the Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

The fun began with the Mavericks trailing 118-117 with 8.3 seconds left. Mavericks forward Maxi Kleber nearly lost the game with an errant pass to Luka Doncic, who got off the ball and drove to the basket in an attempt to score the winning goal.

Understandably, most Cavaliers defenders collapsed on Doncic. That left Mavericks forward P.J. Washington wide open under the basket for the go-ahead touchdown.

Unfortunately for the Mavericks, that left 2.6 seconds on the clock, enough time for Cavaliers wing Max Strus to get the ball and hit a 59-foot buzzer-beater to blow off the roof of Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.

The Cavaliers won 121-119.

Another angle:

This isn't even the end of the madness at work here from Strauss. Here's how the Cavaliers' possession ended in the final four minutes:

  • Max Struss 3-pointer

  • Max Struss 3-pointer

  • Max Struss 3-pointer

  • Max Struss 3-pointer

  • Three-pointer by Donovan Mitchell (off Strauss rebound)

  • Darius Garland is out

  • Donovan Mitchell is out

  • Donovan Mitchell 3 points

  • Evan Mobley's turnover

  • Max Struss 3-pointer

The Cavaliers started this one down 110-100 and proceeded to score 21 points in four minutes, 15 of which came from Strus (all of which came on 3-pointers).

Strus finished with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting (7-of-10 from deep), which was enough to spoil Doncic's huge night of 45 points, 14 assists, nine rebounds, three steals and one turnover. It's been a solid season so far since the Struss signed a four-year, $63 million sign-and-trade contract with Cleveland.
